The structure of carbon fibres

Abstrakt

Carbon fibres are characterised by low weight and very high values of tensile strength and tensile modulus, which are maintained up to temperatures well above 2000°C. These properties make carbon fibres ideal candidates for lightweight composites, in particular for high temperature aerospace applications. The microstructure of carbon fibres is characterised by several peculiar features at different length scales, which are all based on the stacking of graphene sheets and their mutual orientation. This chapter provides an overview about the current knowledge of carbon fibre structure, its manipulation during fibre production and processing, and how the structure determines fibre properties.
